How Can My Dentist Help Detect Oral Cancer Early?

During your regular exam, Dr. Shinners will ask you about changes in your medical history and whether you’ve been having any new or unusual symptoms.

Then, Dr. Shinners will check your oral cavity using the oral ID.

How does the Oral ID® work?

The Oral ID® uses Fluorescence technology.  Optical, bright blue light is shone into the mouth to expose changes and can identify oral cancer, pre-cancer, and other abnormal lesions at an earlier stage, thus saving saves.

What Can I Do to Prevent Oral Cancer?

The most important thing is to be aware of the risk factors.

-HPV
-Alcohol
-Smokers
-Tobacco
-Age (40 and over)
-Genetics

If you have had oral cancer before, you may be more likely to develop it again so keep up those regular visits.
